Brett had recently moved back from the city to his family's home after the passing of his father so he could be with his mother and younger sister (she is ten years younger than him and was going to community college). He had only been back home a little over a month before the incident happened, leaving his family very little time to prepare for much of anything.

They had been traveling together for the first week, just trying to make it away from the city, when a military road blockade ended up separating Brett from his family. Unfortunately, things got bad and he had to flee, most likely leaving his mother and sister there - he has not heard from them or about them since, and he suspects they are dead.

He'd been on the move for the past few months, eventually making it to Arklay, and considering it was a fairly decently sized outpost of sorts, with defensible spots and relatively cut off from the rest of the immediately surrounding area, he decided to set his pack down and rest for a while. He has been trying to settle in ever since with varying degrees of success.
