Jennifer graduated college with a degree in design and volunteered for the Peace Corps. She was sent to Nepal, and worked on water purification and agriculture in a remote village. While there, she met another volunteer, an agriculture major, and the working relationship soon developed into a romantic one, then a serious relationship. They returned to the U.S. together and worked for a while in urban agriculture in Detroit and Portland. Her now fiancé heard been to Arklay Island with his family and heard about the Deimos facility being located there and thought this might lead to revival of the island. They relocated and opened a small business and shop catering to small, sustainable agriculture and livable design. The business started to show some promise when they arranged a loan and ordered a great deal of equipment good for urban and near-urban farming, planning an expansion and maybe inviting others to the island and starting a cooperative business. Jennifer stayed behind to run the business and get ready for the new equipment while her fiancé went to the mainland to check why some equipment was in a warehouse on the island but wasn’t being released and where the rest of the order was. The outbreak occurred before he could return. Jennifer had to adapt, and fast. A combination of knowing how to live rough from her days in Nepal, having a small supply of food, and mostly hiding has kept her going. She knows how to build things, how to clean water, and grow food in odd areas and is hoping to find shelter with a group that wants to build and not just take. If that can’t happen, she can always hide and hope for the best.
