Do you remember when you were a kid and your mom came to wake you up for school? You'd be there in this warm, hazy dream, cocooned in your duvet and suddenly her voice breaks in to your consciousness. You cover your eyes to stop yourself being blinded by the light that's streaming through the curtains she's just thrown open and try to clutch onto that warm, hazy place even as it's ebbing from your mind like the tide.
My life feels like that. Like I was in a wonderful dream and someone snatched off the covers. I had it all, you know? Only, ironically, I didn't know I had it all. My parents were amazing. We had a good, stable, loving home. It was filled with laughs and warmth. Eggnog and Christmas parties. Birthdays and softball games. I was the straight A sophomore with the senior boyfriend.
Four years ago, my uncle got sick here on Arklay. My parents packed us up to come here, look after him and my cousins until he was better. On the way here, by boat, a storm hit and we got into trouble. When the rescue crews arrived, my mom, my dad and my best friend Mike were gone. They were never found. I had amnesia for a long time after that and so I never got in touch with my uncle. I lived mostly in the woods. Grade A student turned hot shot deer hunter? It's laughable but that's my story.
