The release of shotguns in Outbreak is pretty exciting! I mean come on, any zombie movie lover worth his or her salt can't help but love the concept of blasting the living dead with a scattergun. They're extraordinarily powerful, the pump-action variety has that pants-shitting inspiring sound when the pump is racked, and they look cool.
Sadly, I feel as though the Outbreak shotguns are a little lacking in the aesthetic sense. Given that (at least in my mind; never actually used one in a fight) firearms in Outbreak are all just different means of achieving the same result, there are a couple of minor adjustments that would make the shotguns much more accomodating for RP.
1) Resizeability - Of the current models of shotguns, none are resizeable and all but the Mossberg 590 are MASSIVELY oversized. Relative to my avatar's scaling the Winchester M12 is over six feet long with the bayonet mounted! (EDIT/NOTE: The Winchester 1912 measures in at 49.5"... With a 30" long barrel) The handguns are fully resizeable down to specific axes, so it would be really helpful if the shotguns could be modified like that as well.
2) Animations - Not to be excessively judgmental but the shotguns' animations are very poor, and there are only two of them as opposed to 4 for pistols. Whereas handguns' aiming animations work with AOs, both the shotgun's AIM and STAND animations root your avatar in a bolt-upright pose that allows no lateral movement. Because of this, your character's upper body is there majestically holding the shotgun (the placement of the hands in the AIM pose isn't quite right either) while his or her legs frictionlessly and comically swing this way and that under him/her. Definitely not the most imposing look.
As someone who used to work in the Video Game Design industry I have some experience with 3D modeling and animation, but I don't know how SL's animation systems work or their limitations. And I feel that in terms of the sim in general this is at best a very-low-priority bit of feedback. But c'mooooon. Shotguns! 😀
