Day 28 After Contagion
Screams could be heard from the halls of Carlson General Hospital. The medical staff, as well as patients, entered the halls to see what was going on as the occasional police officer ran by towards whatever was making such commotion. The screams grew louder instead of dying down, and now shots were fired. Soon, patients and officers started running the opposite way. Patients fell, medical equipment and supplies laid scattered in the halls, paperwork floated by like trash at the end of a parade as the chaos grew. The hospital had been breached. I knew not from where. I was too busy trying to help those that were getting hurt.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed me by the arm. It was Russel. He was one of the many officers protecting the hospital and my boyfriend. It was good having him there to deal with the stress of being on lock down and having to help all the infected and injured people. He pulled me insistently “MOVE NOW!” he yelled. I never saw the thing coming that nearly jumped on me as I was patching up the large cut on that injured woman’s arm. Instead, it jumped on her as Russel pulled me away. I still remember seeing her two silver fillings as the creature torn her cheek clean off with one bite exposing all her teeth on one side. My hearing instantly became a loud ring as the first shot of Russel’s gun removed the side of some other creature’s head that tried to get us. From there it was mostly a blur as he held my hand tightly dragging me through the halls knocking and shooting infected out of our way.
I remembered the smell of the cool evening air as it hit my nose when we exited the hospital through the back. From there I understood the fate of the hospital as I saw thousands more rushing in from a distance. A loud whizzing noise made my head spin as I turned to see the hospital helicopter spin out of control and explode on the far side of the parking lot. Russel took my hand again, and we never looked back as we jumped into his patrol car and drove off. I immediately worried for my sister Freya as we headed to pick her up.
