IC: Brigita Chvala’s life before the outbreak was nowhere near normal.

Brigita Chvala, was born in the Czech Republic to Irena and Karel Chvala on March 11, 1990. Growing up in a slum outside of Prague, Brigita learned at a young age what it took to survive. As a child she was wily, often getting caught in the act of stealing or vandalism. Her parents disapproved of her outlandish behavior, of course. However, as the years went by, Karel would find himself doing deeds far worse. Burdened with the responsibility of caring for his then, pregnant wife and young teenaged daughter, Karel fell into the company of some less-than-reputable businessmen. Karel became a drug trafficker, and though he despised the shameful work he did, he did not despise the income that it provided. Life would be only slightly improved with Karel’s new line of work, however. They had managed to make it out of the slums but were still only barely surviving, and Karel had dreams of giving his daughter a university education. Blinded by his ambition, Karel became reckless, making promises he couldn’t fulfill.

In the winter of 2008, Irena Chvala gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Unfortunately, the joy of his birth would be short-lived. Brigita’s only sibling would die a month later of pneumonia. A dark cloud hung over the family in the following months. And in the summer of 2009, another tragedy would befall the Chvala family, Karel’s recklessness had finally caught up with him. Karel was murdered that June, during a drug deal gone sour. After her father's murder, no longer feeling safe in the home they had worked so hard for, Brigita gathered up what little money the family had and bought tickets off of a dealer friend. Those tickets would send Brigita and her mother to Northern California. There, Brigita hoped that her and her mother might find refuge. Brigita worked two jobs, not including her side business, attempting to make ends meet. She excelled in learning English, and became nearly fluent after a year of intense study. The mother and daughter had been in California for all of two years before the virus broke out. Once again, their world would be turned upside down as society fell to shambles around them.

As the ever-present threat of death loomed over them, Brigita and her mother would find themselves once again fighting to survive. Brigita had no choice but to take on the role of protector for her mother, who was becoming weaker from a combination of malnutrition and depression. In fear that infection would overtake her ailing mother, Brigita became ruthless in her means of survival. Eventually, infection took Irena’s life, leaving Brigita with nothing but a ravenous monster in her wake. And with no one else to rely on, Brigita would be the one to take the monster’s life, her mother’s life. Now, with nothing left to lose, Brigita has left the town of her mother’s death and found herself on Arklay Island. She lives out of spite, her existence defined only by her sorrow and her fury.
